OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma Congressman Dan Boren has signed a petition to force immediate action on agriculture disaster assistance legislation.
A total of 137 members of the US house signed the petition in just three days. At least 218 members must sign the petition to force a House vote on the issue.
The petition -- which is supported by the Oklahoma Farm Bureau -- would bring The Emergency Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act to the House floor for a vote even though the Agriculture Committee hasn't acted on it.
Boren says the issue is too important for Congress to allow more time to pass. Oklahoma has been one of the states hardest hit by drought, with some areas of the state experiencing their worst drought conditions on record.
