OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Oklahoma County jury has awarded one million dollars to the family of a woman who died at Mercy Health Center in 2004.

Joyce Williams' family sued the hospital for medical negligence in September 2004, less than five months after her death.

Williams was admitted to the hospital in April 2004 for throat surgery and transferred to the intensive care unit with a ventilator to assist her breathing.

Her ventilator became disconnected, and the family claimed it took about ten minutes for a nurse to respond to the alarm. Williams was resuscitated but died eight days later.

Williams' family accused the hospital of providing substandard care, and a jury agreed Thursday after a four-day trial.
