State line gasoline dealers getting a lot of out of state customers

The price at the pump is hitting plenty of folks hard in Green Country. One community has found a bargain and it all has to do with a strategic location.

News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says the town of South Coffeyville sits barely on the southern side of the Oklahoma-Kansas state line, giving fuel vendors a business advantage.

The Woodshed is just steps away from Kansas, but sells gasoline under current Oklahoma tax regulations. That means, a gallon of gas here will run you $2.99 a gallon, while just across the state line, gas in Coffeyville, Kansas sells for $3.09 a gallon.

Rick Wood says 80 percent of his business comes from Kansans crossing the line for a cheap fill. Brian, a gas customer from Kansas: "Yeah, $2.99 is pretty amazing, especially where I'm from; it's $3.19, so it's quite a difference. It really is." Rick Wood: â€œand the fact that Oklahoma is cheaper on tax than Kansas and people will drive, they'll drive 10 miles to get cheaper fuel. And we do quite a bit of business."

But that could all change in the next week, if Oklahoma voters approve a hike in the gasoline and diesel taxes.
