Carjackers opened fire outside a Tulsa apartment complex over the holiday weekend and shot and killed an innocent bystander. Whoever murdered Shay Young is still on the run.
The shooting happened Sunday night at an apartment complex at 68th and Lewis. News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan talked with the victims family and says they are terribly upset and don't understand how an innocent person could die this way.
Some carjackers were in the apartment complex's parking lot trying to steal a car - when the shooting started. Victim’s mother in law Velma Williams: "He was standing outside talking, like they normally do, they were always outside." The family of Shay Young can't believe how his life ended. He was 26, with 4 young children - all under the age of 6. Velma Williams: "Beautiful children, Shay loved his children unconditionally, and they're taking it real hard."
Young was shot Sunday night just steps from his apartment door. The man who shot him was part of an attempted carjacking. A gang was trying to steal a Chevrolet Suburban from the parking lot of the Pomeroy Apartments.
When the driver of the Suburban tried to get away from the carjackers, they shot at him. One bullet hit an apartment window and another hit Shay Young as he was standing by his car. "And he went to get up turn to away from it and it caught him in the stomach."
Tulsa Police say five or six shots were fired, possibly by more than one person. The carjackers fled on foot and haven't been caught.
Young was hit once in the stomach. The bullet hit an artery and Young died in surgery 3 hours later. Velma Williams: “How could you take something that doesn't belong to you, and then shoot somebody? It's just pathetic."
Williams says right now she's as angry and she is sad. Her son in law is dead, leaving her 26 year old daughter a widow with four children. "They were just a beautiful family, it's just sad."
Young's wife made his funeral arrangements Tuesday morning. The funeral is set for 2 PM Saturday at Dyer Memorial Chapel.
And Tulsa Police ask anyone with information about this crime to call Crimestoppers at 596-COPS. Remember if your tip leads to an arrest you could earn a cash reward.
