A 20 year-old mother whose son burned to death has been found guilty on several counts and now faces jail time.
Jeannie Henderson's son died after his walker got stuck on a floor furnace, even though his mother was just five feet away.
6 in the Morning reporter Omar Villafranca says Jeannie Henderson faces more than 8 years behind bars. A jury found her guilty late Thursday night of 2nd degree manslaughter, possession of meth in the presence of a child and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was found not-guilty of child neglect and the jury opted for manslaughter instead of 2nd degree murder.
Attorneys say 8-month old Christian Henderson burned to death right next to his mother. Prosecutors say she couldn't hear his cries because she passed out after using meth. Henderson's attorney says it was just a tragic accident.
The jury deliberated for about 10 hours, before finally reaching a verdict. Tulsa County DA Tim Harris: "I was a little surprised they didn't find the neglect count based on evidence presented, but you know what, this is a system that I devoted by my life whole life to and so I respect the jurors."
Defense attorney Patrick Adams: "It was a win. It was a win. Justice was served. It was an accident all along. Second degree manslaughter is negligence, which was the right decision. The jury did a great job."
Jerry Marten, the boy’s father was also in the room at the time of the death. District Attorney Tim Harris says Marten will also face 2nd degree murder charges and will go to court next month.
