Warmer weather is here and more people are working in their yards, and leaving the garage door open. Home burglaries increase this time of year, because of all those open garage doors.

News on 6 reporter Rick Wells shows us how the Garage Butler will remember to close that door even when you forget.

Jim Quintus is not the Garage Butler, he invented it. It's an electronic device that'll close your garage door even when you forget to, which he did once years ago, he left town on business, then his wife called. "She said you left the garage door open, so that's what stated me thinking about inventing something that would close the door in the event that happened." That was ten years ago. Jim took me out to the garage to show me all the prototypes. "I've got probably 20 or 30 different models."

The engineering department at OSU helped him upgrade the electronics. He found a marketer out in Phoenix, that company arranged for production of the devices in China and in the simplest terms that's how his automatic garage door closer became the Garage Butler. Itâ€™s automatic and it's safe. "In no way does it interfere with any of the normal safety circuits of the garage door system.â€

The unit comes with instructions and all the hardware you need. Here's how it works. You can set it for 3 minutes or 30 minutes. If the garage door is open longer than your preferred setting, the Garage Butler closes it. There is an override button that will permit you to keep the door open longer, but even if you forget that, it has a photo cell, when it gets dark it closes the door.

Now if I can just find something that'll turn off all the stuff I think I left on when I left for work.
