Price of gas too high for some RVers

Steve and Sharon Lawson sold their house in Utah a few years ago and bought a big RV. Now, they drive all over the country.

With some predicting $3 a gallon gasoline within a year, News on 6 reporter Rick Wells asks the Lawson's whether they have any second thoughts about their RV lifestyle.

In 1998 the Lawson's bought an RV and it's been their home on the road ever since. â€œWe've traveled maybe 150,000 miles so far and we donâ€™t' plan to give it up.â€ Having said that he's quick to tell you the price of fuel affects the way they travel. The may not drive as many miles, they may stay in one place a bit longer and they plan fuel stops by tracking gas prices on the Internet. He doesn't stop where it's too high. "In Tulsa you're lucky itâ€™s like 2.08 if you go across the line into Arkansas it's 2.35. So we pick and choose where we buy."

He makes adjustments but he doesn't quit, it's a lifestyle he likes and people who live it are hooked on it. Randy Coy of Dean's RV agrees. â€œIf this is what you do, if this is your passion, then you find a way to overlook those things and just keep on." He says when fuel prices spike, customer traffic slows just a bit then things return to normal, folks are committed to life on the road.

Steve Lawson had a little business with the Lowrance folks then it's on to Denver. A little fuel between here and there with the next big fuel stop in Wyoming. "Because Cheyenne is always one of those places where it's always inexpensive."

You've got to save where you can. Any second thoughts about 7 years on the road, none. About the price of fuel in 7 years, maybe. "I really didn't care how much it cost as long as it was available, I'm having second thoughts about that, I do care what it costs, and itâ€™s expensive."

Back in 2001, the Lawson's drove to Alaska and then to Florida. Totaled about 18,000 miles that year. Price of fuel being what it is, it'll probably be a while before they do that again.
