OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The cost of basic telephone service is going up soon for AT&T customers.

The phone company says it's raising rates by $1.90 per month as of April 7th. AT&T Oklahoma president Don Cain says this is the first rate increase for basic residential telephone service since 1986.

The current cost of basic service varies from $10.22 per month in the most rural areas to $14.34 per month in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas.

AT&T has about 700,000 phone customers in Oklahoma and says fewer than 40,000 have only the basic service.

Company spokesman Andy Morgan says there will be no rate increase for bundled packages such as All Distance.
