WASHINGTON (AP) -- A US Census Bureau study says state taxes in Oklahoma are among the lowest in the nation.
The survey says Oklahomans paid an average of $1,824 per person in state taxes in 2004 to rank as 18th lowest among the 50 states. The amount is an increase of just over $500 -- or 39 percent -- from the state taxes paid per person in 1994.
The survey does not include federal taxes or local taxes charged by cities and counties.
The Oklahoma average is below the national average of just more than $2,000 paid per person. The lowest average state tax bill is in Texas where each person paid an average of $1,368.
The highest is Hawaii with an average of $3,050 per person being paid in state taxes.
