A Mayes County Sheriff's deputy is recovering from a stabbing and a robbery suspect is dead after a standoff in Chouteau.
It started with an investigation Monday morning into a stolen pickup and armed robbery of a Chouteau convenience store. It led deputies to two suspects.
Authorities went to the Chouteau home of Gayla Cochran, where they believed suspect Tracy Whitecotton[pictured] was hiding. Sheriff deputy Sergeant Chris Fogelman kicked-in the door and Whitecotton charged him with a knife. Mayes County Sheriff Frank Cantey: "During the struggle, the assistant chief from Chouteau, Lynn Hearstburger, shot Mr. Whitecotton once in the chest with a 40 caliber handgun."
Whitecotton died at the hospital.
His girlfriend, Gayla Cochran was arrested for harboring a fugitive.
Kevin Newman was wanted for questioning in the case. He was taken into custody in Sapulpa.
