Big changes could be in store for several north Tulsa Public Schools. Parents with children at the schools have scheduled a meeting for Friday to discuss the plans for improvement.
6 in the Morning reporter Omar Villafranca says 11 of the schools have been on the federal needs improvement list. Some have been on the list for several years. Now the law says something has to be done.
TPS wants to combine two of the smallest elementary schools. The plan would put students from Greeley and Houston in one building, in the hopes of easing overcrowded classrooms. There are also plans for a Family Education Support Center to help with tutoring and social services.
And TPS also wants to start a majoring recruiting drive to fill up Monroe and Gilcrease Middle Schools. The goal is to enroll more than 300 students at each school. If enough students don't sign up for the two schools, they'll be forced to consolidate.
There is a north Tulsa community schools meeting Friday afternoon for parents with any questions. It's at Monroe Middle School, 2010 East 48th Street North. The meeting starts at 2:30 PM and is in conjunction with the schools seasonal concert.
There is another meeting next week if parents aren't able to attend Friday's event.
