POCOLA, Okla. (AP) _ The parents of a 12-year-old, wheelchair-bound student say the Pocola School District isn't making their schools accessible.
The couple, Eugene and Kim Wann, filed a federal lawsuit in Muskogee last month. It accuses the disrict of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The girl was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and will enter 7th grade this fall. The lawsuit says that since she was in elementary school, schools generally have been inaccessible.
It claims school staff stuck the girl in a walk-in freezer when she had convulsions. It also says drinking fountains and rest rooms are inaccessible and desks don't accommodate a child's wheelchair.
The school's attorney, Mark Rains, says the district doesn't discriminate against those with disabilities.
