LAWTON, Okla. (AP) -- An early autopsy report shows two little girls who were found in a hot van in rural Cache last week had body temperatures of 107 degrees.
Comanche County Sheriff Kenny Stradley said yesterday that indicates that 5-year-old Karina Kym Kraft and 6-year-old Ki-Anna Destiny Diggs mostly likely died on Friday from hyperthermia.
With hyperthermia, the body produces or absorbs more heat than it can dissipate and is usually due to excessive exposure to heat.
Stradley said one of the girls had a prior medical condition that is being taken into account before the reports are finalized.
He says a witness reported seeing the girls playing by the van nearly two hours before they were found by their adopted mother, Mary Seybold.
According to the National Weather Service web site, the temperature in the Lawton area that day was 97 degrees.
