MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) _ The Veterans hospital in Muskogee soon will be named after a World War Two veteran and former Veterans Administration employee from eastern Oklahoma.
Federal legislation that had already received approval in the US House unanimously passed the Senate Friday that renames the hospital the Jack C-Montgomery Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Senator Tom Coburn and US Representative Dan Boren introduced the legislation.
Montgomery was born in Long and enlisted in the 45th Division Thunderbirds of the Oklahoma National Guard. President Franklin Roosevelt awarded Montgomery the Medal of Honor for his heroics in a February 1944 battle in Italy.
Montgomery was discharged from the armed forces in 1953 and later worked for the VA in Muskogee. Even after his retirement he continued working at the hospital as a volunteer. He died in June 2002.
