OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Legislation that calls for harsher penalties for the owners of dangerous dogs that attack people was overwhelmingly approved by the state House.

The measure passed Tuesday would make it a misdemeanor when a dog attacks another person.

Violations would be punishable by a fine of up to a $1,000 for a first offense and $5,000 for a second offense.

The bill would also make it a felony if the dog kills another person and would subject the owner to up to five years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

The bill now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
