A Sand Springs woman is badly bitten by her neighbor's two pit bulls Thursday night, while she was in her living room.
She thinks the dogs were after her two daschunds when they came crashing through the screen door and as News on 6 reporter Steve Berg explains, she got caught in the middle.
Teresa Willis is covered with bruises and bites after a terrifying encounter with her next-door neighbors' two pit bulls. "To put it mildly, it was extremely terrifying."
It all happened as she was sitting in her living room. It was a mild evening so she slid the glass up on her storm door. “I was sitting here reading and my dogs were sitting over here." She says her neighbor’s 3-year-old boy had let the dogs out and the lead dog came over and charged partway through the screen.
Teresa's daschunds ran toward the door and she moved to try to separate them. "With all of them hitting it, they knocked the latch loose, well the door came open, I knew I was in trouble then."
Teresa was trying to force the pit bulls back out the door, but by now she says the screen was completely gone and the female pit bull clamped down on her wrist. The bite is too graphic to show. "I reached out and grabbed it by the muzzle and keep pinching until it finally let loose, by that time the neighbor came and grabbed both of them."
Teresa's wound is so large she'll need a skin graft to close it. Like most people, she's heard the nature versus nurture debate on pit bulls and her feeling? "It's the breed, it is the breed. You hear too much about the pits that are always attacking people."
She said she's never had any trouble with any other dogs in the neighborhood. "No, I've never had one come through my screen door before."
The pit bulls are being held at the Sand Springs Animal Shelter for observation. Willis says her neighbor agreed to have the dogs put down, but nothing has been scheduled yet.
She says she goes in next week to find out about her surgery.
