State Senate leadership kill bill on animal waste

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The state Senate leadership kills a bill that Attorney General Drew Edmondson says would have hurt his legal efforts to keep the poultry industry from polluting streams in northeastern Oklahoma.

The bill declared that animal waste -- including the feces and carcasses of any captive animal -- is not hazardous.

State Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan says the measure was allowed to die on the calendar when the Senate adjourned a day early last week and a legislative deadline expired.

Edmondson had condemned the measure publicly, saying it was inspired by the poultry industry. He is suing 14 poultry companies over chicken litter that flows into streams in northeastern Oklahoma.
