OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Long-time Oklahoma civil rights activist Clara Luper says she's seen progress, but says there is still discrimination in Oklahoma and across the nation.
Luper was a school teacher when she led a 13 black students in a sit-in at the lunch counter of Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma in August 1958 because they were tired of having to go to the back door for meals.
The sit-in succeeded and blacks began getting service at the counter the sit-ins continued for six years at other segregated businesses in Oklahoma.
The now 82-year-old Luper tells The Associated Press that progress since those days is pleasing, but she says women and people of color still face discrimination in housing and when looking for jobs.
