McSpadden Adds To His List Of Accolades

Clem McSpadden has just about done it all.  Some titles include Navy Lieutenant, U.S. Congressman, Rodeo announcer and star of the Atwood's Hardware commercials, but the famous Oklahoman received one more honor on Thursday in his hometown of Chelsea, where they named the local post office after him.  The News On 6's Steve Berg reports McSpadden is the great nephew of Will Rogers and he still has plenty of the family humor and the admiration of his hometown.

As far as Clem McSpadden is concerned, there is nothing better than seeing his name attached to the local post office.

"I can't tell you what it means.  It's awing because being raised as a depression kid, the post office and the rural mail carriers were our link to the outside world," said McSpadden.

McSpadden talked about the difference of the times.

"We lived with the postal system and the railroad when I was a kid.  And there wasn't any E-bays to shop on.  Couldn't go to Wal-Mart and you couldn't go to, what was that other good place, I see their ads, Atwoods and there wasn't any Atwoods to go to," said McSpadden with a laugh.

Even at 82-years-old, McSpadden had no trouble getting laughs, having some humble fun with his award.

"In research that I've done, they usually name post offices after dead people, and I thought well, they're trying to tell me something," said McSpadden.

Politics and rodeo are the two jobs he's most famous for.

"Oh, there's an amazing correlation between the two arenas in that there's bull in each profession," said McSpadden.

So what is he up to these days?

"Oh we still run a little cattle, and my son and grandson and a young lady, Jamie Longacre and I have a consulting service," said McSpadden.

He says you might still catch him on TV on an Atwood's ad, but not as a rodeo broadcaster.

"They want the young, flat-bellied, 25-year-old guys doing that instead of an old fogie, but I still do 15 or so rodeos a year and enjoy doing it," said McSpadden.

The plaque of course will be there on the post office for a long, long time.
