Garage Space

You’re about to start on a new project in your garage when you realize, you’ve lost about half the tools you need to do it. You know that you have what you need somewhere but you haven’t cleaned your garage in ages. It’s going to take you forever to find the stuff.

If this sounds like you then perhaps it’s time for you to take a weekend to clear things up. While doing this will take time, you’ll be thanking yourself when you have an organized garage. Are you not sure where to begin?

Let us give you a hand. Check out this guide on how to clean and organize your garage in as little as one weekend.

1. Set Aside Time for Organization

First things first, you need to set aside a little time to be able to organize your garage. It’s recommended that you do this on back to back days which is why we mentioned doing it on a weekend.

There are a few reasons for this. The main one is because you’ll be pulling a lot of things off the floor in order to clean The Concrete Makeover garage floor epoxy and to organize your stuff into boxes.

While your stuff is out of your garage it’s being left out to the elements. It’s one thing to leave stuff outside overnight, it’s another to leave it out for a week or more.

2. Gather Your Supplies

The next step is gathering all the supplies you’ll need to tackle the job. You should pick up garbage bags to throw away any pieces of trash lying around, cleaning supplies to wipe down any dirty surfaces, cardboard boxes for things you’re donating, plastic containers for the things you’re keeping, and a vacuum or broom.

Once you’ve got all of these necessary supplies ready, it’s time to go in your garage and start with basic clean up.

3. Do a Basic Cleaning Job

To get started, pick up any small fragments like nails off the floor and then give it a once over with vacuum or broom. Once the floor is clean, it’s time to start organizing.

Lable three cardboard boxes “keep”, “toss”, and “donate”. Put anything you want to keep in the first box. Put the stuff that’s so broken it can’t be salvaged in the second box.

Put everything that you don’t want to keep but isn’t broken in the last box. If you’re not sure what category one of your items fall into ask yourself a simple question. When was the last time you used it?

If the answer is more than a few months ago then that means you should probably donate it or toss it.

4. Use Your Vertical Space

Once you get rid of your “donation” and “toss” boxes all you’ll have left to do is push the “keep” box back into your garage and put your stuff back where it came from.

Make sure that when you’re putting your stuff back that you utilize your vertical space. You can do this by building shelves or hanging pegs.

Using vertical space will keep things from getting piled up on your work tables and floors. It also makes it easy for you to locate what you need.

5. Put Your Stuff in Zones

Another great organization method is to separate your stuff into zones. For most people, the basic zones include car supplies, tools, sports equipment, and gardening stuff.

If you want to you can go the hardware store route and put labels over the different zones. Doing this will help you quickly find whatever you need to find.

6. Using Bins

All of your stuff isn’t going to fit on the walls as vertical space. This being said, you’re going to need a few plastic bins to put some stuff in. You can build some shelving and use it to house the bins.

If you go this route organize them so the stuff you use a lot is on the top shelf and the stuff you don’t use as much is on the bottom. Be sure to label each plastic bin as well.

7. Don’t Try and Do the Job Yourself

As you can see, doing all of this organizing is hard work. If you try and do it all on your own it may take longer than one weekend. If you don’t enlist in a little help you may end up abandoning the project before it’s done.

Call up some friends and family and ask if they can give you a hand. If nobody is free to help there are companies you can hire that can come to assist you as well.

8. Schedule Garage Maintenance

The best way to avoid having to do this long process again is to keep your garage from getting unorganized. Set up maintenance days where you go in and clean things up just as you do with normal household chores.

Pencil these maintenance dates into your calendar so you don’t forget them and stick with them. To keep your maintenance days from being a little less overwhelming be sure that you put away your tools whenever you’re done with them.
