PNR or Passenger Name Record is a unique 10 digit number that is allocated to every railway ticket booking. In case of group bookings, for every six seats booked together, a single PNR number is issued. It is printed on the top left corner of your ticket in case of the ticket issued at a ticket booking counter and printed in a separate cell in the case of an e-ticket.

# Why is every PNR number unique

It is the process of PNR number generation which makes each one of it unique. The number consists of 10 digits and every digit of this number denotes a different thing. The first three digits denote the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) used to book the ticket and the next seven are generated randomly by the system to make this number unique. In every PNR number, the first digit refers to the zone(starting station) of the train. For instance, 1 is SCR Zone (Secunderabad PRS) and 2and 3 are for NR, NCR, NWR, or NER Zone (New Delhi PRS ).

# Why do you need the PNR number

? This number can be used by the passengers to know the PNR status of their RAC (Reserve against cancellation ) or WL (Wait Listed) ticket.

? PNR number gives the seat number and coach number for your booking once the ticket gets confirmed

? You can use the PNR number to know all the details of the booking including the fare paid and the arrival as well as departure time of the train for which the ticket has been booked.

? PNR number is needed for issuance of a duplicate ticket if the original is lost or damaged

# Its significance in Train PNR status

The only way you can check the PNR status of your ticket is through the PNR number. This status tells you whether your ticket is confirmed/ waitlisted or RAC (reservation against cancellation). Though the personal information of every passenger is attached to the passenger, you cannot use this information to check the PNR status as this data is stored in the database of the Centre of Railway Information System (CRIS0 and is confidential. This system generates the PNR number at the time of ticket booking.

# PNR status types

At the time of checking your PNR status, the system will give you an abbreviated form of the current status of your ticket. You need to know what these abbreviations stand for to know your status.

? CNF- Confirmed

? RAC- Reservation Against Cancellation

? WL- Waiting List

? Confirmed+RAC

? RAC+WL

? GNWL — General waiting list

? RLWL- Remote location waiting list

? PQWL- Pooled quota waiting list

? TQWL- Tatkal waiting list

# Validity of the PNR number

The validity of the PNR number is only till the train has reached its last stoppage

If you have your PNR number with you at the time of travel, you can give that along with an ID proof to get your booking confirmed by the TC. It is therefore a useful thing for all those forgetful travelers who forget to carry their tickets!
