BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Two men are in jail and a Broken Arrow Police officer is in the hospital after getting shot in the arm.

Police said the two men got into a fight and one of them fired shots at the other.

When police arrived at the scene, the victim shot through the front door and hit an officer in the arm.

Broken Arrow Police said they arrested Hayden Payne at a home near Cleveland after several agencies spent 12 hours looking for him.

Officers said Hayden Payne’s ex-girlfriend had filed a protective order against him and he went to confront her at Dean Black’s home in Broken Arrow.

They said Payne fired shots towards Black’s front porch, then took off.

When police arrived, Black fired shots through the front door.

"This isn't the Old West you know,” said Officer Chris Walker with Broken Arrow Police. “You can't just shoot someone you don't agree with."

Police said Officer Cody Stanton got shot in the arm.

Officers arrested Black for assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said they aren't sure if Black knew he was shooting at officers, or if he thought Payne had come back.

"I can't speculate what he was thinking, however when you use a gun you need to know your backdrop and you need to know your target,” said Walker. “You can't just naturally assume the bad guy is at your door. At this point it was a good man trying to help him."

Officer Walker said Officer Stanton has been on the department for two years and has to have surgery but should recover.

Walker said the support from the community toward the injured officer has been great.

"He's very energetic, he's always got a smile on his face, even in the hospital we are getting updates that he's in good spirits and he's in a lot of pain. I mean he's been shot,” said Walker.

Officers found Payne at a family's Lake house today, along with the gun.

He’s now in jail for shooting with intent to kill.

Broken Arrow Police said it’s been since 2007 since they’ve had an officer shot in the line of duty and they’re just thankful it wasn’t worse.
