Tulsa Summer Camp Offers Outdoor Oasis To Help Students Explore Learning

A Tulsa summer camp is trying to help students with learning, by offering a day camp to help kids learn and take breaks to explore.

The executive director at Camp Loughridge, Jacob McIntosh, said they have a huge conference center to social distance, and lots of counselors that can bring their summer camp care to the classroom setting.

Nestled near Tulsa Hills, Camp Loughridge offers an outdoor oasis with camp activities and a huge room that will be full of tables come Monday.

McIntosh said after a successful summer camp this year, they wanted to use their resources for something new.

"Parents are working the stress of that, we're looking for a way to help the community," McIntosh said.

Enter "day camp for distance learning:" Three days a week, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., kids ages six to twelve can get help with their virtual or distance learning with counselors. They also get breaks to enjoy activities like basketball or hiking.

"We have a big facility and access to counselors that can help with kids," McIntosh said.

Annie Bordwine is a single mom of three kids navigating distance learning at Tulsa Public Schools. She would love for parents to have a choice in going back to learning in person but said if the school board says no to that, an option like the day camp might be necessary.  

"I'm going to have to consider some type of pod or camp because I can't do another nine weeks like I have with my third grader," Bordwine said.

Parents only have to sign up for the week and McIntosh said the day is flexible for kids' individual schedules. He said it's just another option for all the parents and kids struggling to navigate online school right now.

"It's very individual so we're here to help with whatever the choice is in that,” McIntosh said.

The camp costs $135 per week and scholarships are available.

It starts on Monday and registration is still open.
