The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be holding an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss who should get the COVID-19 vaccine first after it is approved and made available to the public.

Tens of millions of vaccines could be available in the United States within the month of December and in Oklahoma, a vaccine could arrive before Christmas.

According to the State Health Department, the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive between December 10 and December 14.

The Moderna vaccine is expected to arrive in Oklahoma by December 22.

According to state health leaders, at first, Oklahoma will receive 30,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 10,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

CDC officials said the decision of who gets the vaccines first will ultimately be up to each governor, but they are expected to recommend the elderly and healthcare workers be the first in line to receive it.

Dr. Amesh Adalja from Johns Hopkins said, "this is going to be one of the most challenging public health distribution efforts we've ever seen. it's going to be hard to imagine this going off without a hitch."

According to health experts, it will be months before vaccines are widely available to the public.
