A man who almost lost his life due to COVID-19 is learning to walk again.
He still has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but his wife said she’s just ready for him to come home.
"My jaw dropped. Not even a week ago, he could barely stand for 30 seconds," said Shannon Remington, Danny Remington’s wife.
After almost losing his life from COVID-19, Danny has been dealing with complication after complication. He is learning how to walk again and this week, he took his first steps.
"I just had to keep thinking about the scriptures that I know and again, getting back to Shannon and the kids," said Danny when asked what he has been thinking about to push him through hard days.
Danny got into an ambulance in August because of breathing issues and hasn't been home since.
"He has only seen the kids in person five minutes total and both of those were coming off of ambulance rides," said Shannon.
After testing positive for COVID-19, he was put on a ventilator twice.
“He was on ECMO for 43 days. He was on the ventilator twice, for 70 days,” said Shannon.
Since his recovery at the end of September, complications have kept him in medical facilities all over Oklahoma, and away from his family.
"Tomorrow is day 160," said Shannon.
Shannon took on the responsibilities of a single mom, trying to figure out what to do financially, while being there for Danny and their two kids who are 11 and seven. One child has special needs.
"Thankfully we have had some things in place that have helped cover a good portion of what we need. our day to day needs have been met, it is all the medical bills piling up now," said Shannon. "There are no words to describe how stressful it has been."
Wednesday, Shannon smiled as we talked about the strides her husband is making towards recovery. They are hoping to have him home by Valentine’s Day.
"There is finally a light at the end of the tunnel, and it doesn't look like an oncoming train," said Shannon. "My daughter wrote something the other day, she is in first grade. She had to write a letter to a friend and she wrote ‘Dear Dad, I hope you come home soon I have been praying for you.’"
"Her prayer is going to be answered, I am coming home eventually,” said Danny.
If you would like to support the family, you can donate to their GoFundMe here or support Shannon’s Facebook Shop Stitched By Sisters.
Below is the message on the GoFundMe.
“Many of you know, Danny Remington was one of the unlucky ones that COVID had a devastating impact on his health. After 75 days in the ICU, 43 of those on full ECMO support, Danny is still continuing his healing in long-term care and hopefully rehab very soon. But as he reaches the next stage in his healing, his wife, Shannon, is faced with the very real possibility that their home won't suit his needs. Things such as bathroom modifications, a wheelchair ramp leading into the house, a lightweight wheelchair for transport to and from doctors' appointments, and a whole house reorganization are absolutely necessary before Danny comes home. Shannon has done amazing things with the family's budget during Danny's illness, but couple these with their out-of-pocket insurance costs that will likely hit $10,000, all of these are currently impossible. On top of that, the family's financial resources will only last for a couple more months. While the family's needs will likely last long into 2021, this will at least carry them part of the way."
