The Demand Project is hosting its annual event Thursday and Friday teaching about what signs to look for in a sex exploitation situation. It is being held at the Owasso Tulsa Tech Campus.

This is the fifth year of The Demand Project’s two-day “Beyond Awareness Summit” event that teaches the community and other law enforcement members what to look for in human trafficking schemes, online child predator techniques, and more. The two-day training is to help people learn to see human trafficking and sexual grooming tactics before it’s too late.

They have partnered with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, Tulsa Police Department, U.S. Marshals, and even a teenage human trafficking survivor to speak with expertise on these topics.

Demand Project President Jason Weis said every parent with a child needs to learn what to keep them safe from because there are so many new social dangers to look out for.

“If you have a kid that has a device, has social media, that is an open door for a bad guy,” Weis said. “It’s not a matter of if your child is reached out to, it’s a matter of when, you need to have a game plan and know this is happening.”

He said each person who attends will walk away with knowledge they can immediately begin to use in everyday life.

The event capacity is capped at 200 attendees due to the pandemic and masks are required inside the building. There will be sanitizing stations provided and physical distancing measures will be implemented.

Anyone who would like to attend can show up for registration at 7:30 a.m. Thursday to get signed up, Weis said there are still spots available. The event itself will begin at 8 a.m. on both days and wrap around 3 to 4 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch, and coffee will be provided at no additional cost. The total cost for the two-day program is $80 per person.
