Tulsa’s The Little Light House is determined to give families of children with special needs hope that their kids can thrive in amazing ways. The school just started a podcast to give parents resources and support, even if their kids don’t go there.
Christina McEndarfer asks the questions, her guests tell their stories. She is the host of The Little Light House Podcast called “Helping Kids Be Kids.”
"My mom was one of the first teachers here in the early 70s and then served on the board the first seven years of my life," said McEndarfer. "Getting to join in on something that was so important to her feels like legacy."
These episodes are recorded weekly and posted on Tuesdays. Anyone can listen for free.
"My desire is that they would feel like they belong in a community that values every child," said McEndarfer.
The podcasts aren't just for the families of students at The Little Light House, but for anyone who has a child with special needs in their life.
"There is joy and there is hope and there are going to be successes and miracles in the lives of these kids. Is it going to be hard? Probably. Is it going to be sad? Sometimes. But it is going to ruin their lives? No," said Lauren Gebhard with Tulsa’s The Little Light House.
These episodes matter to McEndarfer, they matter to the people she works with, the families she's talking to, the people she interviews. It is about more than just providing information.
"You have all of this responsibility. You have all these financial burdens. You have all of these questions and it all leads towards isolation," said McEndarfer. "If we can be that voice telling them, ‘actually, in my experience I have seen a child with that same diagnosis thrive.’"
On Friday, the crew interviewed Kendra Morgan, founder of Building All Children. She’s just one of many guests sitting in their studio chairs who share their story in the hopes it brings a little more light into someone else's.
"I am blown away every time I hear these stories. It changes my perspective," said McEndarfer.
