Tulsa Public Schools is opening its second Montessori school, this time at Grissom Elementary School.
Montessori classrooms are different from a normal classroom setting. Students learn in mixed age groups and teachers work to meet students where they are.
"It's such a whole-child approach that's consistent with what we believe about what's good for kids," Grissom principal Brent Rowland said.
"Students work in mixed aged groups, it's no longer first or second grade, we consider it lower elementary or children's house, which is a very Montessori term there,” Montessori Program Specialist Diane Beckham said.
The district said Grissom Elementary will start the program for pre-K and kindergarten next school year and expand by one grade each school year.
The enrollment deadline is Friday, Feb. 12.
