When it comes to hard work, no one pushes themselves like Hudson Haws, bar none.

“Your muscles want to quit, but your mind has to say no," Hudson said.

Hudson has come a long way in the last six and a half years since the former Bethany football player was paralyzed from the waist down during a game.

For the past five months, Hudson has been increasing his strength and mobility working with Jeremy Johnson, an adjunct exercise science professor at Southern Nazarene University.

“Little things are becoming extremely easier. Pouring water, tons easier, I’m able to lift gallons of water and pour them which I’ve never really did before," Hudson said.

“It’s so easy to help, we’re not using fancy equipment, we did this in my house with basic equipment," Johnson said.

Hudson first started making strides last year at a facility in Dallas.

“I knew within about 30 minutes of our visit that we needed a facility like this in Oklahoma," said Tim Haws, Hudson's father.

That’s what prompted the Haws to start The 34 Project. Their mission is to create a private neurological therapy center in Oklahoma.

The Haws said there is limited extended rehab options for people with spinal cord injuries in Oklahoma.

“I want to provide a place where people can engage in this kind of active therapy. To be able to provide that closer to them, it’s not right for them to be able to miss out on something like that just because of distance or maybe financial issues," Hudson said.

“I think that’s what we’ve been called to do, is to bring hope into some dark situations," Tim said.

Johnson will help with therapy treatments once the center is up and running.

The Haws said they have a building picked out in Bethany and plan on opening later this year.
