A Georgia congressman introduced a bill that would make it easier for survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre to seek reparations.
The author of the bill said it would give survivors and descendants of the Race Massacre access to courts that they have been denied over the years.
Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson introduced the "Tulsa Greenwood Massacre Claims Accountability Act" last week. He said that in the past, survivors and descendants have had their claims rejected because of statute of limiations restrictions. Congressman Johnson's bill seeks to change that.
The bill was introduced during a subcommittee hearing last week in D.C. The hearing included testimony from the only living survivors of the race massacre. It was the second hearing held by the subcommittee.
The first hearing was held in 2007, but was barred when the Supreme Court said it was past the statute of limitations.
A committee will now review the bill and make any changes to it before it is voted on.
