Pro-am in the morning and practice rounds in the afternoon for the competitors at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Southern Hills Tuesday.

It’s also the first day we get to hear from some of the big names about the course and the state of their games.

Most of the 50 and over players love that Phil Mickelson tamed a younger field last weekend, but he isn’t the only 50-year-old worth watching.

“I think all the guys on the championship tour have a pride in the quality of the product we’re putting out there and our abilities,” 2003 US Open Champion Jim Furyk said. “You know, we don’t hit the ball as far as we used to, but you look at the scores and guys are still firing.”

Former OSU All-American and longtime tour player Scott Verplank was on the green along with 1996 British Open Champion Tom Lehman putting in more work Tuesday as well.

“It’s great for the state of Oklahoma, it’s great for golf, this is a great golf state,” Verplank said. “Just to have this tournament this year and to follow it up with the big one next year, it really couldn’t be any better.”

Just one more day for the pros to get things championship ready – and they’ll need to be at that level to have a chance to win on this classic layout made tougher with the Gil Hanse renovation a couple years ago.

The first round starts Thursday.
