Some Porter residents are outraged after discovering grass and plants around graves at the city cemetery had been killed with chemicals.
Joy Hendrix said she goes to the Greenwood Cemetery in Porter when she needs some peace. She has five family members buried in the cemetery - her mom, dad, sister, brother and sister-in-law - and she likes to reminisce on good memories.
“It gives me peace, it gives me comfort," Hendrix said.
Hendrix said when she came out to the cemetery to put new vases on her parents' grave, she was devastated to see someone had put grass killer around all the graves.
“There was some kind of weed killer around the headstones, all around it," she said. "It broke my heart.”
Hendrix said for years, the city has kept the cemetery looking beautiful, and this is the first time someone has used chemicals around the graves. She is worried it will damage the headstones and can’t believe this happened right before Memorial Day.
“To see it happen so soon before, this weedkiller is going to stay there for months," Hendrix said.
Porter Mayor Bradah Littlefield said normally city crews weed-eat around the graves but this time there was a lack of communication. As for Hendrix, she just wants a plan put in place to make sure this never happens again.
“They’ve all got to get on the same page," Hendrix said. “It’s really sad and devastating.”
