Doctors Discuss Vaccine Concerns, Say It's Safer For 12 And Older

Kids 12 and older can now get the Pfizer vaccine, but some parents fear possible long-term side effects.

The Oklahoma State Medical Association President, Dr. Mary Clarke said widespread vaccination is a critical tool in ending the pandemic.

 “It can damage them long-term, like for their future,” parent, Stephanie Meadows said.

“I would be open to getting the shot for them,” parent, Kenneth Kelley said.

There are mixed opinions from parents about kids getting the vaccine. However, Dr. Clarke said the vaccine is safe for kids 12 and older.

“We have a large number of children who have done very well with this vaccine,” Dr. Clarke said.

And even though they are less likely to get seriously ill from COVID-19, children can pass it to others.

“If I am a young person, and I have COVID, I’m passing that to my parents, my aunts, and uncles,” Dr. Clarke said.

Dr. Clarke encourages parents to talk to their family doctor if they still feel it’s not safe.

Stephanie Meadows, who is a mother of a 12-year old, worries the vaccine could have negative effects on her child down the road.

 “There is no certainty in anything, can I guarantee that, absolutely not, but I am comfortable giving this vaccine to my children, yes,” Dr. Clarke said.

“If it helps, and if it keeps curving the way it’s all going for everybody, I mean COVID hit America hard,” Kelley said.

Kenneth Kelley plans to get the shot for his four kids. Dr. Clarke does want parents to be aware of any allegoric reactions.

Dr. Clarke said children can get the vaccine even if they are taking normal medications.
