Meals on Wheels is expected to break ground on a 24,000 square foot service center in Tulsa near 51st and Yale on Thursday. The new building will sit across from the YMCA’s Tandy family location.

Calvin Moore, Meals on Wheels President and CEO, said the current facilities at 31st and Garnett have served them well, but they have outgrown the building. He said the new service center will have a state-of-the-art kitchen, which will help them serve one million meals.

Other perks in the new building will include more space to train and develop thousands of volunteers and new administrative offices. Moore said he has noticed the need for service in Tulsa so these new spaces come at the right time.

“What we’ve done over the last five, six, seven years is grow on purpose through strategic planning, through community engagement, through further partner engagement,” said Moore. “What that’s allowed us to do is really lay a foundation to really meet the actual need that’s emerging in the community.”

The groundbreaking is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday.
