Volunteers are helping make sure people are staying healthy in this extreme heat. Walter’s Way is a non-profit near Admiral and Sheridan and volunteers are going out on the streets to make sure people have food and water.
The organization said it's seeing about 20 to 30 people each day. “I was just walking around cleaning up the trash and a helpful stranger said do I want to eat something and drink something and I said sure," said Dex Ford.
The helpful strangers Ford referred to are the Walter's Way volunteers and they brought him back to cool off and get a free lunch. Joy Block-Wright started the organization and it's not only named after her father, but it's also part of Joy's life story.
“I was incarcerated myself and as I learned that there are people out there that need help when they return from incarceration then I myself got a pardon from Governor Stitt and I wanted to reach out and give back to the community," said Block-Wright.
She's helping to raise donations of school supplies for kids with parents in prison, providing furniture to people recently released, and this week she's added making sandwiches. “And then the heat index was going to be up to 108 to 110 and we saw people that were on the side of our building just trying to get a shaded spot and needed water to get hydrated then we knew that there was a need that needed to be fulfilled," said Block-Wright.
She has a heart for helping people and said everyone who comes to Walter's Way leaves with a new pair of shoes if they need them, a bible, and a full stomach.
Block-Wright said you can drop off any donations and school supplies at Walter's Way Furniture Outlet near Sheridan and Admiral.
