Jenks High School students are choosing to remember the victims of 9/11 in a visual way Friday morning ahead of the 20th anniversary of the attacks. The students are coming to school early to place 2,977 flags in the grass as a way to pay their respects.
Twenty years ago on Saturday, almost 3,000 people were killed when four hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
On Friday, as a way to pay tribute, the Jenks High School Student Council and the school’s chapter of the Young Americans Foundation are coming together as part of the “9-11, Never Forget Project” to place a flag in remembrance of each person who died.
The visual representation will be located in the grass at the main high school oval near 1st and B St. Once the flags are placed, there will be a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. School officials say there will also be a small ceremony with speakers as well.
Those flags will stay up through the remainder of the school day for everyone to pay their respects.
