A scenic trip to the Pacific coast turned into something out of a disaster film for a Oklahoma City metro couple.

“‘Hang in there. Stay with us Jenny.’ And their voices just started fading out,” Jenny Vu said.

“I was just screaming, ‘Take Jenny first. You have to take Jenny first,” Lauren Perry said.

“My body was on fire,” Vu said. “Just…it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life.”

The couple was on vacation with their dog Ivan in Washington, happily celebrating Perry’s birthday.

“As I turn my head, that’s when (I) saw the wave,” Perry said. “It was a good five to six feet above my head. I yell, ‘Jenny, run!’ And I try and reach out and grab her.”

A wave came out of nowhere, overpowering them. Perry fell face first into some rocks.

“My pelvis was already crushed at this point. I was able to go to our dog, who was still tied up,” Perry said. “He was hopping in the wave trying to keep his head above water.”

Vu remembers bits and pieces of the moments. A tree crushed the pair.

“I got completely crushed on my left side to where my pelvis was just crushed,” Vu said. “I couldn’t open myself up. I was just crushed and the only thing I could move was my arms.”

With the help of others on the beach, they were able to get help. Their ambulance crashed into a tree due to a blown tire.

“My body slid up. I just remember screaming this entire time because we were in so much pain at this point,” Vu said.

“They couldn’t give us plain medication because our blood pressure was too low,” Perry said.

After two hospital stays, three ambulances, a medical flight and multiple surgeries, both are home but they still need a lot of time before they make a full recovery.

Doctors at OU Health told Perry that she can try walking in 10 to 12 weeks. Vu can get the bar in her pelvis removed in December but doesn’t know when she will walk again.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help them with medical bills while they recover and take time away from work.
