The City of Broken Arrow says its waste pickup crews have been able to make more stops and boost efficiency.

They say that's largely thanks to Jerry Schuber, who took over leadership of the Solid Waste and Recycling Department in May.

Schuber's pride in his work is infections.

"People love firemen and they love policemen because I mean let's face it, those are cool jobs. And those are heroes. But the third one? Garbage man," Schuber said.

A big part of his leadership is boosting crew morale by highlighting good work and recognizing team members who've gone above and beyond.

But there's also something to be said about solidarity.

"Today I'm on camera with you, tomorrow I might be on the truck with them to try and make sure our customers are served," he said.

He isn't afraid to throw on a reflective vest and help out on the back of a truck. He says the crews appreciate the comradery.

"They like to be recognized," he said.

Schuber says one of the biggest impacts hasn't had to do with him, but with the public.

He says he's seen an increase in friendly faces greeting pickup crews - offering things like water bottles.

"They come out and say hello," Schuber said.

"And so, they've gotten to know their service providers and see what they do."

All this has had a big impact - the city says it's starting to see an increase in the number of stops drivers have been able to make in a day.

Schuber wants to keep the positive momentum going - and hopes to eventually add new equipment and training that'll increase the number of stops his crews can make.
