Many people are dealing with seasonal allergies and doctors said sinus infections are up compared to just a few weeks ago. The warm weather has people spending more time outside, soaking up the last of the warm temperatures. “I’m out a lot and I’m subjected to some allergy problems," said Jill Leslye.
Leslye spends her time outside painting artwork. Doctors said she isn't the only one suffering from fall allergy problems. “I’m seeing an increase in patients with allergy symptoms this month. I think with the rain and then with it going from hot to cold a lot more people are having flares," said Dr. Christin Baker-Hankton.
Dr. Baker-Hankton with Utica Park Clinic said she's seeing more of those flare-ups turning into sinus infections. "We’re not appropriately treating our allergies. So that’s going to be treating with over-the-counter antihistamine," said Dr. Baker-Hankton.
She said younger kids and even newborns are also suffering from allergies. Dr. Baker-Hankton said that getting a nasal wash can help and start antihistamines immediately. “If you know that you have allergies and each year you battle with chronic sinus problems then yes when the weather starts to change go ahead and start your regimen of allergies one to two weeks before that so that you can be ready," said Dr. Baker-Hankton.
She said traveling in and out of the region can also impact sinuses. Leslye said she's just suffering through the pollen and grass allergens. “It comes with the seasons. This morning I had a little breathing, tiredness, my eyes are itchy," said Leslye.
