It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but the holidays can also be a dangerous time.
The Tulsa Police Department is reminding those who plan on traveling during the holidays to keep their property safe.
Police say if you will be out of town for the holidays, make sure your home isn’t an easy target for thieves.
Andre Baul with Tulsa Police said thieves are opportunists, so make it as tough as possible for them.
He says can keep your home and belongings safe by following these steps:
Lock your doors
Make sure your doors are locked. Check the front and back. Have windows locked all the way around the house. Also, keep any other entrances to your home locked — like a gate or garage.
Talk to your neighbors
Ask your neighbors if they can keep a watch on your house while you’re out of town. If possible, have them remove delivered packages from the porch to keep thieves from getting tempted.
Close your curtains
Many of you may have those beautiful Christmas trees on display but it's not a good idea to leave wrapped gifts visible through windows. Do your best to hide items that can easily be noticeable from the outside.
Install security camera
Think about investing in cameras that have motion detectors and live feeds that allow you to monitor your home at all times.
TPD said it’s important to take the necessary precautions to keep yourself and your home safe. While these steps seem simple and common knowledge, sometimes people just forget.
“We all make mistakes, we all forget things, especially around this time of year when we have a million different things on our mind. But, just giving each layer of a deterrent helps," said Baul.
TPD says if you do see something suspicious be sure to report it. You never know how that information may help someone.
