It is considered the most wonderful time of the year, but the holidays can also cause stress and anxiety.
Psychologists say maintaining stress can be as simple as taking a deep breath and enjoying time with family.
Dr. Namik Kirlic is an associate investigator at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research.
He says factors for stress can include social gatherings, cooking meals, and buying presents. Plus, this time of year can throw off typical routines for things like sleep and exercise.
For some, grief comes into play since it may be the first holiday without a loved one.
He says some ways to take care of yourself are maintaining good sleep, connecting with family, and at least getting some exercise like going for a walk.
He says another way is to be flexible if things don't go as planned.
"I think just take a moment and take stock of what's important. So it's okay to stop, it's okay to slow down and really ask ourselves and all of us, what is important to us during the holidays?” Kirlic said.
Kirlic says it is important to acknowledge what's causing your stress, but then remember what you are grateful for and share it with others.
