Man Shot, Killed By Trooper After Chase Identified By Oklahoma Highway Patrol

Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a trooper shot and killed a man who pulled a gun on them after a high-speed chase through Tulsa.

OHP says the suspect who died is Alan Hutchinson from Inola.

Troopers say they first got a call about the suspect, Alan Hutchinson, shooting at other cars while driving on I-44 near Yale. Troopers say when they spotted Hutchinson and tried to stop him, he wouldn’t pull over, and instead lead them on a chase, driving nearly 100 miles an hour.

"During that pursuit, it was very aggressive. Troopers attempted to use a tactical vehicle intervention, a TVI, to try to bring that vehicle to a safe stop,” said Trooper Eric Foster.

Troopers say they were able to stop the car quickly, but when they did, Hutchinson got out with a gun. They say that’s when he was shot and killed by a trooper. They say they found a gun on the ground next to Hutchinson.  

"As always it is still under investigation, it is very preliminary, investigators haven't been here very long to try to piece together all of that, and witness statements and things like that,” said Foster.

OHP says troopers are trained to end pursuits as quickly as possible. But, they say this situation was even more dangerous because they were told Hutchinson was already shooting at other cars.

"Troopers are trained to do that as quickly as possible. We don't want pursuits to stretch any kind of distances, so that's what they were attempting to do,” said Foster.

OHP says the trooper who fired the shots will be on paid leave while the shooting is investigated. Records show Hutchinson has been in and out of prison since 2009 for drugs, eluding police, and other convictions. He was last released from prison in 2018.
