Some members of the Muscogee Nation got to visit their ancestral homeland for the first time this weekend.
They traveled to Oxford, Alabama for a 2-day event where they shared tribal stories, hymns, and history. Oxford was once part of a Muscogee community that dates back 12,000 years. An estimated 23,000 Muscogee people were forced out of the region in the 1830s as part of the Trail of Tears.
They moved west to what is now Oklahoma, leaders say that for many, this was their first time visiting the area.
