A trip to the park came to a sudden halt for a metro mother and her son. The two never made it to the playground and called police instead for help.

When the Petty family imagined their Tuesday at the Route 66 Park they expected to play on the swings and slide, but not what they saw down the road.

"To be honest I thought me, and my son were going to die that day," said Kori Petty.

While on the drive to the park, Kori looked out her window and noticed a little boy, then what he had in his hands.

"It's like he was serious, like he found a target. I was scared so I reversed my car. My son said he had ducked behind my seat," said Kori. "I don't know if it's real or not. I don't know."

OCPD said the gun is a BB gun. Kori recorded her conversation with police and said they began to ask her questions.

"If you came from NW Expressway and you're going to Route 66 Park, both of those are that way so how did you end up out here," asked the officer in Kori's recording.

"I've never been asked that question, I was actually taken back. Like, why does it matter what direction I'm coming from? The point at hand is this 6-year-old has a gun and he's pointing it at me and my son," said Kori. "My son being a black boy, I feel like if the roles were on the other foot my son would be laid out on that ground or I would have went to jail. Ya'll would have done more."

Kori said even though the gun isn't real, it doesn't change the fear felt on the other end of it.

"The point is no one should be pointing a gun at anybody, especially with all this gun violence and stuff going on. It shouldn't be happening."

News 9 did reach out to OCPD who didn't want to comment but they did say that no laws had been broken.
