News On 6 is teaming up with Every Kid Counts Oklahoma to recognize innovative teachers from across Green Country. This week, we’re recognizing Corey Maker, a 9th grade Oklahoma History and Osage Language teacher at Bartlesville High School.
Mr. Maker is phenomenal at coming up with projects and assignments to engage his students in active learning. They learn about and use a primitive weapon called an atlatl, they set up a real teepee, they participate in an escape room through a breakout box, they immerse themselves in writing through a much-loved journaling assignment called Can You Survive the Plains, and so much more. Mr. Maker advocated and established an Osage Language course which will be offered in Bartlesville for the first time, allowing students to learn a Native language. He brings history alive with lectures and assignments his students will remember for the rest of their lives.
