Broken Arrow Public Schools' Spring Creek Elementary fifth graders are combining science, technology, engineering and math with the arts to teach about bullying through an original musical.
The students sing, dance and even operate robots and drones during the performance.
"When you do have friends outside of school, even if you were bullied, you're going to have the friends who will stand up for you and who will be with you even though some people do that to you,” said fifth grader, Gianna Land.
The school’s music specialist, Rachel Stapleton said she wrote the script for her students.
"It's just really important to bring these social, emotional learning concepts to them, and through the arts I think is a great way to do it,” said Stapleton. “I mean, the arts connect us to our shared humanity."
Seventy-seven fifth graders with different backgrounds and interests are uniting for the performance.
"These are kids that maybe not necessarily would love to do musical theater and yet are taking these aspects of 'How could we work together?' We're some kids who maybe didn't talk at school and now working together to create something bigger," explained Stapleton.
While these students are learning and entertaining, they are also reminding everyone the power of kindness.
"That bullying is not a good thing,” said fifth grader, Cason Byron. “That you shouldn't bully at all, ever."
The free performance is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Kirkland Theatre on Broken Arrow High School campus.
