ATF agents and Tulsa Police officers are looking for the person responsible for setting several fires around downtown. Agents said one of the targets was a Tulsa Police truck at the headquarters.
A camera in downtown Tulsa caught the person walking up to a flower bed, then lighting something on fire and walking away. Investigators said five similar incidents have happened since March 21.
“It seems to be a crime of opportunity in areas where it’s just easy to access and can start a fire and make a quick getaway,” said Ashley Stephens, ATF.
Agents said one of the targets was a Tulsa Police truck at the headquarters in downtown.
It fizzled out before any serious damage could happen, but agents know things could have ended much worse.
“The fire at the Tulsa Police Department could have been really bad had it not been put out quickly,” said Stephens. “It could have spread and put a lot of people in danger.”
Investigators said they are not sure if this person is specifically targeting places or if they are suffering from mental health issues.
They said whatever the motive is, they need to track this person down fast.
“It may have started off as a grass fire, has progressed now to a vehicle fire,” said Stephens. “Generally, those progressions go from a vehicle fire to a building fire.”
The ATF is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person.
