Two families are out of their homes Friday night after an apartment fire near 41st and Highway 169.

The fire happened at Silver Creek Apartments where several units have some damage and two are scorched.

Tulsa Firefighters said they could see a thick cloud of smoke from the highway and when they got to the scene, flames were shooting out of the roof.

Several people called in the apartment fire around 6:15 Friday evening as fire and heavy pressurized smoke poured out of the building.

Residents were evacuated through the back of the building, firefighters said.

The fire started in an upstairs apartment and quickly spread to the unit next door.

The lower units on the same side likely have smoke and water damage, and firefighters went to the backside of the building to evacuate an additional four apartments, just to be safe.

Fighting a fire when it’s this hot out can take a toll on firefighters. That’s why their rehab unit also responded. It carries supplies like drinks, tents, and air.

The fire department has been extra busy this week, with several fire and medical calls in the aftermath of the storm and all of the disaster relief efforts.

“We’ve had, you know, more than 40 fires since the storm came. That’s a pretty heavy load. So, these firefighters are certainly tired, but they’re happy to do what they can to protect citizens. That’s what they signed up for, so we’ll keep trucking and doing our best,” said Andy Little, TFD.

Firefighters said no one was hurt.

Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by improperly disposed smoking materials.
