There are many dangers to your health and safety during winter, especially if you are caught outdoors underprepared. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the best defense against cold-related health problems is to prepare your home and vehicle ahead of winter storms.

What should I keep in my car this winter?

Several items could be helpful in your car if you ever get stuck in winter weather. Consider keeping these in your car.

  1. Ice scraper
  2. Blankets
  3. Gloves
  4. Flashlight
  5. Non-perishable food and water
  6. Extra windshield wiper fluid
  7. Kitty litter or sand to use for traction

What are the signs of hypothermia?

The CDC says those most at risk are older adults, babies, and those outdoors for long periods. The signs in adults are shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. Parents should look for warning signs in their children, like bright red, cold skin, and low energy.

If anyone is experiencing these symptoms and their temperature is below 95°F, call 911 immediately.

Those who cannot get medical help immediately should move to a warm shelter, remove any wet clothing, and warm the center of the body.

If the person is unconscious and has no pulse, perform CPR while warming the person. The priority is to get medical attention as soon as possible.

What are the signs of frostbite?

The CDC defines frostbite symptoms as a white or grayish-yellow skin area, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy, and numbness in the area.

If someone shows signs of frostbite, they should get to a warm room and put the affected areas in warm water or use body heat. Do not use excessive heat.

How do I keep my pet safe from intense cold?

Pets can suffer from dry skin as well as other dangers when outside during the winter. Pay special attention to their feet, making sure they are clean and checking for cracks in paw pads. Consider petroleum jelly or booties to protect them from salt and chemicals. Make sure to keep your pets inside when possible.
