The Sand Springs Police Department was a recipient of a grant that allows it to hire another police officer, but it's having a hard time finding someone to fill that position.
The Community Oriented Policing Grant is designed to help law enforcement try to reduce violent crime by bringing in more officers, according to the Department of Justice.
However, the department just isn't getting a whole lot of people applying for the position.
It said officers are spread thin with their current duties as they act as student resource officers and man the streets.
"When we accept or when the school accepts the funding, we accept responsibility to cover that position. Then it takes somebody away from our normal work and puts them in a different position. So we’ve got to backfill with people that aren’t here yet," said Todd Enzbrenner, SSPD Deputy Chief.
This grant gives the police department two years to hire someone.
Sand Springs wasn't the only city to receive this money. Bixby was also a recipient.
